What Happened? — Problem

Industrial manufacturers could now make far more goods than local demand absorbed, and competing products were increasingly indistinguishable in function. Soap, biscuits, bicycles, and cigarettes had to be differentiated by something other than performance. At the same time the printed image was constrained by the technologies available: relief printing from wood or metal handled type well but reduced pictures to line work, and full color meant hand-tinting or expensive multi-block registration. Cities were growing, populations were newly literate, and hoardings and kiosks offered enormous surfaces along streets that thousands of people walked every day. What was missing was a way to print large, richly colored images cheaply enough that a manufacturer could paper a city with them.

Why Did It Happen? — Innovation

Lithography, invented by Alois Senefelder in Munich around 1798, printed from a flat stone rather than a raised or incised surface, exploiting the mutual repulsion of grease and water. Because the artist drew directly on the stone with a greasy crayon, the printed mark preserved the gesture of the hand, and tonal drawing became reproducible for the first time. Chromolithography extended this to color by using a separate stone for each ink, built up in careful registration. In Paris from the 1860s Jules Chéret industrialized the process for large-format posters, developing a three-stone method that produced a wide range of color from red, yellow and blue. He printed over a thousand designs and effectively invented the poster as a commercial medium.

What Changed? — Impact

Color lithography turned the street into a designed environment. Chéret's posters were followed by work from Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, whose Moulin Rouge sheets of the early 1890s used flat color areas, radical cropping, and hand-drawn lettering integrated into the image rather than applied to it; Alphonse Mucha, Eugène Grasset, and Théophile Steinlen extended the vocabulary. The influence of Japanese woodblock prints, newly circulating in Europe, is visible throughout in the flat planes and asymmetric composition. The poster boom created professional demand for artists who could work at scale and in series, which is one of the practical origins of graphic design as a paid occupation. It also fed directly into Art Nouveau, which took the poster as a principal form.

Design Impact

  • Made image and lettering a single drawn composition rather than a picture with type set beside it, which is the foundation of integrated graphic design.
  • Established scale, flat color, and silhouette as tools for legibility at speed, since a poster must work on a moving viewer at twenty paces.
  • Created the first large body of work by named commercial artists, giving the emerging profession both visibility and a portfolio tradition.
  • Introduced systematic color separation thinking, the direct ancestor of process color and of every channel-based image workflow since.
  • Turned brand recognition into a visual problem, producing recurring characters, mascots, and house styles as persuasion devices.

How Did It Affect Society?

Advertising at this scale changed the relationship between people and goods. Purchasing had been largely local, mediated by a shopkeeper who knew the customer and the stock; branded, nationally advertised products moved that relationship to a manufacturer the buyer would never meet, addressed through images. Posters also made public space commercial in a way it had not been, and cities began regulating hoardings within decades. The poster craze of the 1890s produced collectors, specialist magazines, dealers, and exhibitions, so the same objects functioned simultaneously as street clutter and as art. For the women who appeared in most of these images, the effect was more particular: a compact repertoire of poses and types circulated at enormous scale and became a dominant public picture of femininity.

The Costs

This is the point at which design begins to be used systematically to manufacture desire rather than to communicate information, and the technique was applied without restraint. Nineteenth-century advertising promoted patent medicines with no efficacy and sometimes with opium or alcohol content, and tobacco advertising built its visual language here. Soap and cocoa advertising in Britain and America routinely used racial caricature, with imperial conquest presented as a selling point, and museum collections including the V&A retain these sheets precisely as evidence. Lithographic work was also physically harmful: stone grinding produced silica dust, and the trade used lead and chromium pigments and, later, solvents that caused documented occupational illness. The advertising industry that consolidated in this period established the structural assumption that media would be funded by persuasion, which later shaped magazines, broadcast, and the web.

What Can Designers Learn Today?

The poster is the original constraint exercise, and its rules survive because the constraints do. One message, legible in the time it takes to walk past, built from a shape recognizable before any word is read. That is the same problem as an app icon, a notification, or a card in a feed. The period's harder lesson is structural. Once persuasion pays for the medium, the medium's design serves the persuader, and everyone working inside it is making choices on behalf of someone who is not the viewer. Designers now inherit that arrangement almost everywhere images are distributed for free. Knowing who funds the surface you are designing is not a peripheral ethical question; it determines what the design is actually optimizing for.
